Tamil star Chiyaan Vikram's Thangalaan was long overdue for its streaming release. However, the film has now been dropped unceremoniously on Netflix. Initially expected to arrive on streaming just four weeks after its theatrical run, audiences had to wait nearly 17 weeks to watch it from the comfort of their homes.
Vikram has also seemingly moved on from the project. He hasn’t commented on the much-awaited arrival of Thangalaan on streaming platforms through his social media handles. The actor is now focused on his upcoming movie, Veera Dheera Sooran, which is expected in cinemas in January next year.
Thangalaan was an ambitious project for everyone involved. It was a costly venture for Vikram’s solo career, mounted on a grand scale with a big budget and helmed by director Pa Ranjith. Bankrolled by Studio Green, Thangalaan narrates a story of oppression and rebellion, set against the backdrop of the Kolar Gold Mines.
Vikram pushed his limits as an actor in terms of physique and appearance to portray a tribal leader who fights to free his people from slavery. Set in British India, Thangalaan also tells the story of a British officer who embarks on a quest to uncover a gold mine. The officer seeks the help of Thangalaan, who comes from a lineage skilled in navigating the challenges of forests and enchanted lands. The expedition forces Thangalaan to confront his inner demons and uncover his true legacy and its place in world history.
The film also stars Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Daniel Caltagirone, and Pasupathy, among others.
Thangalaan was released amid high expectations and was anticipated to perform exceptionally at the box office. However, the film opened to mixed reviews and seemingly underperformed in terms of ticket sales.
