The hit Malayalam cop thriller Thalavan is finally set to make its streaming debut next month. It has been a long wait for streaming audiences to watch this film, which will premiere on SonyLIV on September 12.

Thalavan defied the trend by staying off streaming platforms for about 15 weeks. Typically, new Malayalam movies arrive on streaming platforms within four weeks of their initial theatrical release. However, this trend is gradually changing, with many hit movies opting for extended theatrical runs and resisting early digital releases.

One of the main reasons for this shift is that, unlike a few years ago, OTT platforms are no longer paying premium prices for movies that cut short their theatrical runs for streaming releases. Despite the Malayalam film industry’s huge popularity among streaming audiences worldwide, it still struggles to secure strong backing from streaming partners. Most movies go to theatres without the safety net of OTT deals, and only when they become commercially and critically successful do they attract interest from streamers. This has led Malayalam filmmakers to rely more heavily on theatrical revenue to recoup their investments.

In recent months, Malayalam movies have emerged as major draws in theatres, setting record box office earnings in the first six months of 2024. Thalavan garnered positive reviews from critics and became a profitable venture at the box office.

Thalavan is helmed by Jis Joy and stars Biju Menon and Asif Ali in the lead roles. Based on the trailer, the film revolves around the drama stemming from the shifting power dynamics between two police officers. The two cops, played by Biju Menon and Asif Ali, are honest and dedicated but find themselves on opposing sides for some reason.

Thalavan also stars Miya George, Anusree, Dileesh Pothan, and Kottayam Nazeer.
