Thalapathy Vijay’s TVK Flag Anthem blurs lines between cinema and politics

Thalapathy Vijay took a significant step in his political journey on Thursday by unveiling a new lyrical video, marking the launch of the official flag for his newly formed political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The song, titled Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam: Flag Anthem, introduces Vijay as a saviour figure, echoing the heroic roles he has portrayed throughout his film career.
The anthem begins with animated visuals depicting a group of people atop a black elephant, symbolizing power gone awry, and using a whip to oppress the common people. Chaos, suffering, and pain prevail until the arrival of a white knight on horseback, bearing the flag of TVK. This knight, representing Vijay, brings with him a new force—grey elephants that stand in stark contrast to those controlled by the oppressors. These elephants are protectors, safeguarding the people instead of dominating them.
The imagery of the elephant in the video serves as a metaphor for power, with Vijay promising not to wield it as his predecessors did, but to remain grounded, standing with the people and shielding them from harm. In the song, his arrival signals the dawn of a new era marked by just progress, inclusivity, and joy—a narrative straight out of the larger-than-life roles he has embodied in his 68 films.
The upbeat lyrics of the anthem celebrate Vijay's decision to step away from his successful film career to devote himself fully to serving the common people, portraying it as an act of gratitude toward his fans and supporters.
While launching the TVK, he announced that he would retire from acting in movies to focus on his political aspirations. The decision shocked the industry, considering he's one of the highest-paid actors in the country and a box office magnate in South Indian cinema.
Vijay is now waiting for the release of The Greatest of All Time, which is due in cinemas on September 5. Following this, he will join hands with director H Vinoth for Thalapathy 69, which is touted to be the last film project.
