Suriya reveals Rolex movie will be dark all the way: 'No compromises...'
While Kanguva was the main focus, Suriya’s fans couldn’t help but question him about his upcoming role as the dark character Rolex in a planned standalone film by director Lokesh Kanagaraj.

Tamil superstar Suriya arrived in Kochi on Tuesday to a rousing reception from fans, who thronged the airport in such numbers that it caused a security concern. He later attended a fan event at a popular mall, where an overwhelming crowd showed love and admiration for the Tamil star, rivalling or even surpassing that enjoyed by superstars of Malayalam cinema.
While Suriya was in Kerala to promote his upcoming movie Kanguva, he was also asked about his future collaboration with director Lokesh Kanagaraj. Suriya captured audiences' imagination when he embraced a dark role in a cameo in Vikram, portraying a character named Rolex. His less-than-10-minute appearance stunned audiences, who were used to seeing him play more morally grounded roles.
Although Suriya has portrayed gangsters, hitmen, smugglers, and con men before, these characters have always had a likeable quality. However, Rolex in Vikram is a stark contrast—an unflinchingly brutal, psychopathic villain addicted to drugs and violence.
During a press conference in Kochi, Suriya was asked whether Rolex's backstory might reveal any motivations for his life of crime. Suriya responded that Lokesh Kanagaraj has no plans to soften Rolex’s dark persona.
"I don't think Lokesh will do that. I don’t think he will make any compromises. It will be out-and-out Rolex (read dark). He doesn’t need to do bad things to do some good deeds. I’m not sure, given the current trends and audience expectations, that such storytelling would not resonate with audiences," Suriya said.
Lokesh had previously confirmed plans for a standalone film on Rolex, recognizing the character's impact and the way Suriya brought it to life. However, he noted that he has yet to develop the script for the project. Currently, Lokesh is busy filming Coolie with Superstar Rajinikanth. After completing Coolie, he will begin work on Kaithi 2, with the Rolex movie expected to follow.
