Suriya on why Kanguva won't clash with Vettaiyan: 'Rajinikanth has been Tamil cinema's identity for 50 years'

Tamil superstar Suriya has confirmed that his highly anticipated movie Kanguva will no longer be released on October 10, as initially announced. The decision was made after it was revealed that Superstar Rajinikanth's Vettaiyan is also slated to be released on the same date. Suriya, out of respect for the legendary actor, chose to delay his film's release to avoid a clash.
During the audio release event of Meiyazhagan on Saturday evening, Suriya explained his decision, highlighting Rajinikanth's towering presence in Tamil cinema. "On October 10, Rajini sir's Vettaiyan is coming out. Rajini sir is my senior. He started acting the year I was born and has been the identity of Tamil cinema for the last 50 years. And I believe, on that date, only his film should come out. This is our respect towards Superstar."
Suriya expressed his faith in Kanguva and its potential to elevate the status of Tamil cinema worldwide. "More than 1,000 people worked on this film for over 2.5 years to make something special in Tamil cinema. And I am very confident that the hard work that has gone into making this film won't go to waste. I believe you will give the love and respect this film deserves," he said.
Kanguva was originally set to be the first film to announce an October 10 release date. However, when Lyca Productions also selected that date for Vettaiyan, the industry was challenged. Exhibitors and distributors were particularly concerned about the two major films clashing, as it would likely lead to both films eating into each other's business.
Suriya's decision to postpone Kanguva is seen as a move that takes the larger picture into account. It reflects his understanding of the market dynamics.
Kanguva is the most expensive movie of Suriya's career, and avoiding direct competition with a Rajinikanth film could greatly benefit its box office performance. Suriya is confident that the film will receive the celebration it deserves when it eventually hits the screens. "Kanguva is a baby, and the day it is released is its birthday. And to turn that day into a celebration, I believe you will stand by me," Suriya remarked.
The producers are yet to announce the new release date for Kanguva.
