The latest Tamil blockbuster Amaran, starring Sivakarthikeyan in the lead role, has exceeded expectations among critics, audiences, and industry insiders alike. As the film continues its strong box office performance, the streaming release of Amaran on Netflix has been postponed.

According to industry sources, Amaran's digital release on Netflix will be delayed by a week to allow the movie to fully capitalize on its expanding box office potential. This marks the first time such a concession has been made for a Tamil film since streaming platforms became a major revenue stream for filmmakers.

It's worth noting that Netflix has historically adhered strictly to its release schedule, especially with Tamil cinema. Previously, all films—regardless of box office performance—have arrived on streaming platforms before completing a four-week theatrical run. Even Thalapathy Vijay's recent film, The Greatest of All Time, followed this pattern. However, the unexpected success of Amaran appears to have prompted the producers to renegotiate terms with Netflix. The film may start streaming by the end of December first week.

Beyond Tamil Nadu, Amaran has become a top choice for moviegoers in Kerala, the Telugu states, and Karnataka. The film has reportedly grossed over Rs 200 crore globally by the end of its second week and is expected to cross the Rs 300 crore mark before the end of its theatrical run. By extending its time in theatres by another week, the producers, Raajkamal Films International and Sony Pictures, are giving it an even greater chance of reaching this box office milestone.

Amaran’s success is also impacting the anticipated release of Tamil superstar Suriya's Kanguva, limiting the latter’s screen count in Tamil Nadu to under 40%. This development is a setback for Kanguva’s producers, who had aimed for a wide release on over 1,000 screens in Tamil Nadu alone.

Amaran is based on the life of Major Mukund Varadarajan, an elite Indian Army soldier, who died during an anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014. The film, written and directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, stars Sai Pallavi as the female lead.
