At the trailer launch event, actor Sivakarthikeyan revealed that he produced the film to celebrate the young, talented director P S Vinothraj. He also added that if Kottukkaali achieves box office success, he plans to further invest in introducing new talents like Vinothraj, with the intention of giving back to cinema. “I wanted to produce P S Vinothraj’s film (Kottukkaali) even before I heard the story. It was my way of celebrating Vinothraj. If this film succeeds, I will advance funds for his next film and also finance films for other new filmmakers like Vinothraj,” the actor revealed.

He further added, “Earning profit in cinema is important; however, the audience made me the star that I am today. By investing in films made by new directors, I am giving back to cinema. This is my service to cinema.”

    Kottukkaali: An intriguing trailer

The newly released trailer provides a sneak peek into the world of Kottukkaali. Set in a rural village in Tamil Nadu, the film revolves around a family’s efforts to help their daughter, whom they assume to be possessed by a spirit. However, the reason for her silence is not being possessed by spirit but the patriarchal norms imposed upon her. Soori and Anna Ben play the lead roles as Pandi and Meena, respectively.

Interestingly, the makers have not used a traditional background score in the film; instead, the rooster’s crowing sound serves as the main driving force in elevating the emotions. Helmed by acclaimed filmmaker P S Vinothraj, the rural drama previously won a Special Jury Award at the Transilvania International Film Festival and was the first Tamil film to premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Kottukkaali is set to hit the big screens on August 15, 2024.
