Director Siva about Kanguva
Filmmaker Siva shared his excitement over the initial reactions to his latest release, Kanguva. Starring Tamil superstar Suriya in the lead role, the movie has been nearly three years in the making. Known for small-scale family dramas, Kanguva marks an ambitious step into uncharted territory for Siva, both in terms of scale, budget, and visual grandeur.
Siva revealed that the audience reactions to the U.S. premieres were overwhelmingly positive, and he expressed hope for a similar reception in his home state of Tamil Nadu.
“Kanguva has been released in theatres today, and I am very happy. Friends in the U.S. who saw the movie called and congratulated me. They say it’s a huge blockbuster. I am very happy and excited,” he shared with the media.
Siva watched the first-day, first-show screening of Kanguva in Tamil Nadu with fans. While the film premiered in other states as early as 6 AM, most screenings in Tamil Nadu only began at 9 AM.
“After 2.5 years of hard work, the movie is finally out for the public to see. Friends from Kerala and Andhra called to say they enjoyed it. The response from other states has been very positive, and we’re hoping Tamil Nadu will respond similarly,” added cinematographer Vetri.
Kanguva’s visuals are a highlight, and Vetri shot the entire film without using artificial lighting, creating stunning visuals that have drawn praise from audiences.
“Kanguva isn’t perfect, but at a time when most large-scale movies leave us with a throbbing headache, this film reminds us of the pure thrill of watching larger-than-life spectacles in a packed theatre,” read Desimartini’s three-star review.
A lot is riding on the success of Kanguva, touted as the most expensive film in Suriya’s career, with a budget exceeding Rs 300 crore. The film delves into themes of promise, forgiveness, and reincarnation, weaving a narrative that explores the profound impacts of compassion across lifetimes.
