Shamshera: From Ranbir Kapoor's double role to the new 2022 release date of the film, here's everything you need to know

Ranbir Kapoor has been missing from the silver screen since he brought actor Sanjay Dutt ’s life story to audience in Sanju. The movie released in 2018 and Ranbir and Sanjay signed their first film together after that which is Karan Malhotra directed Shamshera which is yet to arrive in cinemas.

A dacoit drama, Shamshera backed by Yash Raj Films has finally managed to block a new release date on the 2022 calendar and can be enjoyed by fans in cinemas in July after several delays in production and release due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Shamshera Story and Cast

Shamshera is period action adventure drama which is set in the pre independence era where a dacoit tribe rises to free itself from the shackles of the British Raj. But unlike most independence dramas the villain in the story is Sanjay Dutt’s character who Ranbir will be seen facing off.

What is also interesting about Shamshera is that the movie will see Ranbir essaying a double role for the first time in his career. The actor will be playing the titular character Shamshera and also his son Balli and shot for both roles simultaneously when filming began in late 2018.

The film stars Vaani Kapoor as t the leading lady who will be playing a travelling troop dancer and took training in Kathak for the role which is unlike anything we have seen her do so far in her career.

Apart from Ranbir, Vaani and Sanjay the movie also stars Ronit Roy , Saurabh Shukla and Ashutosh Rana .

Shamshera has been helmed by filmmaker Karan Malhotra who made his debut in Bollywood with a blockbuster remake of Agneepath starring Hrithik Roshan in 2012. He has directed Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra ’s Brother and Ranbir’s Shamshera is his third film in Bollywood.

Shamshera Release Date

The Ranbir Kapoor starrer has been a long time in the making and has often been de-railed for its initial plans owing to the pandemic. Shamshera went on floors in December 2018 with plans of arriving in cinemas in July 2020.

The movie managed to complete filming in late 2020 and planned to release in February 2021. After meeting further roadblocks, YRF has now set the new release date of Shamshera as 22 July, 2022.
