Shahid Kapoor on postponing Jersey’s release: ‘We didn’t want to come when the nation’s mood was not right’
Jersey was originally scheduled to arrive in theatres on 31st December 2021. However, due to the growing number of Omicron cases, the makers decided to push the release.
After Kabir Singh, which received mixed reviews but emerged to be the third highest grossing Bollywood film of 2019, Shahid Kapoor is all set to return to the big screens with Jersey . Also starring Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapur , the sports drama was initially slated for a release on 31st December 2021. But just a few days prior to the premiere, the team decided to push the release due to the Omicron wave. Rumors suggested that Jersey may take the digital route like many other Bollywood films did last year. However, that didn’t happen.
In a recent chat with Pinkvilla, Shahid revealed that he and producer Aman Gill were following Omicron closely. When they realized how fast it was building, they decided to wait for it to subside. The actor explained, “We didn’t want to come with the film when the mood of the nation was not right. We took the right decision for the long-term prospects of the film.” Talking about not taking the OTT route despite getting many offers, Shahid stated, “Everybody just loves the film too much and we are confident of what we have made.”
He went on to share, “We made this film with the intent of being viewed on the big screen. The emotionality of the film is such that it’s best when viewed with a group of people. Fortunately, Omicron finished soon. It was a tough period because the producer’s money was at stake. But we are now ready, with full power.” Well, we are sure fans are happy with the decision as they gear up to watch Jersey in theatres on 14th April.
