Lyca Productions has announced an update on the much-anticipated film Rajinikanth's Vettaiyan for Monday morning, fueling speculation that it could share the same release date as Suriya’s Kanguva—October 10.

In the next few hours, we will have confirmation about a major box office clash between two of the most awaited movies in Tamil cinema this year. Lyca Productions announced on Sunday that it would provide an update on Vettaiyan on Monday at 10 AM.

Trade sources are fully convinced that the producers will confirm the release, which is expected to be on October 10. The same release date has also been locked by the makers of Kanguva, the most expensive movie of Tamil star Suriya's career.

Producer KE Gnanavel Raja has been very cautious in picking the right release date to give Kanguva the optimal conditions to thrive at the box office. After the success of Kalki 2898 AD and its wide reception in the North Indian states, Gnanavel felt the market mood was conducive to the release of Kanguva and finalized October 10 as the release date.

In an earlier interview, Gnanavel claimed that he had no intention of clashing his movie with Vettaiyan, proclaiming himself as the biggest fan of Superstar Rajinikanth. He stated that he chose that release date only after confirming that Vettaiyan would not be released on the same day.

However, if the producers of Vettaiyan have had a change of heart and also selected October 10 as the release date, it would pose a serious challenge to Kanguva. The movie stands to benefit from a wide release in Tamil Nadu, given that there is a lot at stake. Stakeholders in Tamil Nadu might not be pleased about these two mammoth movies releasing on the same day, as it's not good for business—especially after experiencing a dry spell for more than six months in 2024.

"We cannot decide any of these things. But I can assure you that it will not happen for Kanguva Part 2. Nobody will dare to release their films against Part 2. During the release of Part 1, someone may release their film without knowing," Gnanavel said recently in an interview.
