The trailer for the upcoming Tamil movie, Raghu Thatha, starring Keerthy Suresh in the lead role, was released on Wednesday. Judging from the trailer, the film promises a fun take on Tamil Nadu's uncompromising stance on the issue of Hindi imposition.

Raghu Thatha marks the directorial debut of Suman Kumar, known for co-writing popular web series like Farzi and The Family Man seasons 1 and 2. The nonchalantly comedic tone buried in socially and politically dense scenarios speaks of the influences of directors Raj and DK. "Here's the trailer of my first as a director. This journey was long, testing, and tough. But like the old jungle saying goes, 'you're worth it'," tweeted Suman Kumar.

Raghu Thatha deals with a political, social, and cultural issue that has been close to the heart of the people of Tamil Nadu for over six decades. The matter is still relevant and has the power to unite people across the state. "Hindi theriyadhu poda (I don't know Hindi)" is one of the popular punchlines of politically active people in Tamil Nadu. This punchline also finds prominence in Raghu Thatha.

The title of the movie, Raghu Thatha, is inspired by an iconic scene from K. Bhagyaraj's 1981 film Indru Poi Naalai Vaa. A scene in the film achieved legendary status in Tamil cinema, involving a Hindi teacher trying to teach the language to a Tamil student, exaggerating how alien the Hindi language felt on the tongue of a native Tamil speaker.

Similarly, Keerthy's character, Kayalvizhi, rebels against the issue of Hindi imposition in her own style. She also seems to use cunning ways to circumvent the social stigma around learning Hindi to achieve a career goal.

Raghu Thatha, a period drama, is bankrolled by Hombale Films, marking their foray into Tamil cinema. The film is due in cinemas on August 15.
