Sudha Kongara has been in talks about her upcoming film Puranaanooru for a long time. As reported earlier, the film was initially set to star Suriya and Dulquer Salmaan. After the critically acclaimed Soorarai Pottru with Suriya, Sudha Kongara announced her reunion with the actor, and the film was officially launched. Nazriya Nazim was cast as the female lead, while Dulquer Salmaan and Vijay Varma were signed for other crucial roles.

However, recent reports suggest that the director has decided to completely revive the project with a new cast. There has been speculation about Sivakarthikeyan replacing Suriya's role and director-turned-actor Lokesh Kanagaraj is set to play the antagonist. But the latest rumors hint that Telugu actress Sreeleela has replaced a popular actress in the project.

Initially, Malayalam actress Nazriya Nazim was cast as the female lead. However, according to the latest reports, Telugu sensation Sreeleela is now in talks to take on the role. Although no official confirmation has been made, it is speculated that the director is in discussions with several stars to finalize the new cast. Reportedly, Sudha Kongara is also in talks with Dhanush to replace Suriya's character. An official announcement about the project is expected soon.

    Suriya’s exit from Puranaanooru

After their successful collaboration on Soorarai Pottru, fans were eagerly anticipating another team-up between Suriya and director Sudha Kongara. However, sources indicate that Suriya exited Puranaanooru due to creative differences, but there was no conflict between him and the director, as they parted ways amicably. The news has disappointed fans who were looking forward to seeing their second collaboration in theaters. For context, Soorarai Pottru was initially set for a theatrical release but later debuted directly on OTT in 2020 due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

Puranaanooru is reportedly going to address the topic of anti-Hindi agitations in Tamil Nadu, a movement that has opposed the imposition of the Hindi language in the state since 1937.
