Producer KE Gnanavel Raja has dropped an exciting bombshell: Baahubali 3 is in the works. During a discussion about the sequel to his upcoming project, Kanguva, which is slated for a 2026 release, Gnanavel Raja made the unexpected revelation, emphasizing that timelines need not be rigid for successful franchises.
"Baahubali 3 is in the planning stages," Gnanavel Raja said. "I found out while discussing with filmmakers last week. They did Baahubali 1 and 2 back-to-back, but they're now planning Baahubali 3 after a gap. Similarly, Kalki 1 is out, and Kalki 2 will be made after two other movies. Even Salaar and Salaar 2 will have a gap between them. Once the audience connects with the characters, they will enjoy them whenever they are made. Take, for example, Suriya's Singam series. There was a gap of three to four movies between each instalment."
The Baahubali franchise, directed by SS Rajamouli, was a game-changer in Indian cinema. It redefined the scale of Indian filmmaking, launching the industry onto the global stage. Released in 2015, Baahubali: The Beginning made Prabhas a national sensation, while Baahubali 2 shattered box office records, showcasing the true potential of the Indian market.
Rajamouli’s Baahubali didn’t just cement its lead actor’s stardom in India, it also made Prabhas internationally famous. With Rajamouli’s RRR earning an Oscar and the director gaining widespread recognition in Hollywood, Baahubali 3 could take the Indian film industry to even greater heights.
Currently, Rajamouli is focusing on pre-production for his next major venture, tentatively titled SSMB29, which will star Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu. The film is touted to be a globe-trotting adventure.
Gnanavel Raja hopes that Kanguva will do for Tamil cinema what Baahubali did for the Telugu film industry. He believes that Kanguva could become Tamil cinema’s first film to cross Rs 1000 crore at the box office.
