Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday confirmed the streaming release date for Petta Rap, starring Prabhu Deva and Vedhika. The film will become available for streaming on November 12.

It seems like Petta Rap didn’t have a streaming partner prior to its theatrical release. Typically, films with pre-release streaming contracts debut online about four weeks after their theatre runs. However, Petta Rap took more than six weeks to secure a streaming platform.

Streaming platforms have become increasingly cautious about movie investments across languages, often choosing a selective approach. For movies featuring big-name casts or those that promise immediate viewership appeal, platforms pay a premium. For others, platforms may prefer a profit-sharing agreement, with revenues hinging on audience turnout. This shift has left many films without a streaming option, particularly those with less established casts or mixed critical receptions. Tamil cinema, in particular, has seen over half of its productions struggle to find a digital home, posing a significant challenge for filmmakers.

Director Aishwarya Rajinikanth’s Lal Salaam, for instance, still hasn’t secured a streaming partner despite big names like Superstar Rajinikanth in a cameo role and AR Rahman composing the score. Poor box office performance and lacklustre reviews ultimately discouraged platforms from picking up the project.

Though it stumbled in theatres, Petta Rap may find a broader audience online. Released in cinemas on September 27, the film received lukewarm reviews and failed to generate ticket sales. Its trailer suggests a plot centred on the journey of an aspiring actor struggling to succeed in the film industry. The film is written and directed by SJ Sinu, and also stars Vivek Prasanna, Bagavathi Perumal, Ramesh Thilak, Mime Gobi, Riyaz Khan, Kalabhavan Shajon.
