Before SJ Suryah became one of the powerhouse actors in South Indian cinema, he was one of the most sought-after filmmakers. After successfully making his directorial debut in 1999 with Vaali, and solidifying his position in Tamil cinema with Kushi, he also made a mark as a director in the Telugu film industry.

Suryah directed Telugu superstar Pawan Kalyan in the remake of Kushi in 2001, which became a big hit. He followed that success by directing another superstar, Mahesh Babu, in Naani.

At the height of his directing career, Suryah revealed that he had written a romantic film for Pawan, which was touted to be a spiritual sequel to Kushi. However, that didn't materialize.

While promoting his upcoming movie Saripodhaa Sanivaaram, Suryah revealed the behind-the-scenes discussions that took place around the unmade movie with Pawan.

"I wrote a script for Pawan sir. It was a romantic story, and it was in the mood of Kushi 2. He liked the film, and we decided to make it. After two or three years, we both got busy with our individual careers. When we revisited that script, Pawan garu felt that he had moved away from romantic movies, and his energies had shifted. 'I think it won't look good if I perform in love stories now,' he said. I didn't believe that. I felt it would have been grand if he had done it then," he told Gulte.

Suryah is now fully focused on strengthening his profile as an actor. He has been excelling in this front by landing some of the strongest supporting roles in movies across different languages. It's noteworthy that Suryah has managed to elevate even some of the weakest films thanks to his command over the craft of acting and his commitment to performance.

He will next be seen playing a psychopathic, megalomaniac police officer in Saripodhaa Sanivaaram, which stars Nani in the lead role.
