The latest Tamil movie Nandhan didn’t gain much traction in theatres when it was first released on September 20. Despite garnering glowing reviews from celebrities, the film failed to capture the attention of movie-goers. However, if you're in the mood for a drama set in the countryside that explores the politics of prejudice, you can now enjoy Nandhan from the comfort of your home.

Nandhan, starring Sasikumar in the lead role, made its streaming debut on Amazon Prime Video on October 11, coinciding with the Ayudha Puja celebrations.

The film didn't even follow the obligatory four-week theatrical run before becoming available for streaming. It seems the producers found little financial sense in keeping the movie away from OTT platforms for a longer period, especially after its theatrical run ended sooner than expected. With new releases, including Superstar Rajinikanth's Vettaiyan, dominating theatres in Tamil Nadu, Nandhan would likely have struggled to find an audience during the holiday weekend.

The early streaming release, however, increases the chances of Nandhan finding a wider audience during the festive season. The film is currently available only on Prime Video for audiences in India. Written and directed by Era. Saravanan, who is known for village dramas, Nandhan centres around a hero from a marginalized community.

In the movie, Sasikumar's character, Ambedkumar, works as a servant to Koppulingam (Balaji Sakthivel), a power-hungry village leader who has held the post of panchayat president for many years, running unopposed. When the government announces that the position is now reserved for a candidate from a marginalized community, Koppulingam loses eligibility. To maintain control, he chooses Ambedkumar, his loyal servant, to contest the election. Ambedkumar's naivety, lack of awareness about his rights, and lack of ambition make him seem like the perfect pawn. However, as Ambedkumar begins to realize his democratic rights, he upends Koppulingam's carefully laid plans, leading to a power struggle in the village.
