After a long wait, the makers of Telugu actor Varun Tej’s upcoming big-budget film Matka have officially announced the release date. While the new date has excited fans, the film is set to clash with one of India’s major releases—Suriya’s fantasy spectacle Kanguva.

    Matka's release date is out

Taking to social media, the makers of Matka revealed that the film will be released on November 14, 2024, coinciding with Children’s Day. Sharing a suave poster of Varun Tej in a dashing vintage suit, they wrote, “The game is set! Coming on November 14th, 2024.”

For the unversed, Suriya’s Tamil period fantasy drama Kanguva is also scheduled for a November 14 release. While Suriya’s pan-Indian film was aiming for a solo release in the South, it will now clash with Matka at the box office this Children’s Day. Considering both Matka and Kanguva are billed as pan-India big-budgeted films, it will be interesting to witness the box office clash between the two magnum opus films.

    More about Matka

Directed by Karun Kumar, Matka is reportedly inspired by real-life events. According to Telugu reports, the film draws from the life of Ratan Khetri, an infamous figure in the world of betting. Khetri is credited with transforming 'Matka,' a form of gambling that originated in Mumbai in 1962, into India’s most popular betting game, building a nationwide gambling empire that he controlled for decades. Varun Tej is reportedly portraying the role of this gambling king, with the story being fictionalized for broader commercial appeal.

Earlier on Varun Tej’s birthday, the makers unveiled the first glimpse of the film, called the Opening Bracket. The short teaser offered a sneak peek into Varun Tej’s dark and mysterious character, who plays an underworld mafia leader. Notably, the actor only utters the word ‘promise,’ which added to the film’s growing hype. Apart from Varun Tej, the movie also features Naveen Chandra and Kishore in pivotal roles, with Meenakshi Chaudhary playing the female lead. The original score and soundtracks for the film are composed by GV Prakash Kumar.
