The Malayalam psychological thriller Level Cross has Asif Ali and Amala Paul in lead roles.
Asif Ali in Level Cross
The latest Malayalam movie Level Cross, starring Asif Ali and Amala Paul in the lead roles, has found a home on streaming more than two months after its theatrical release. The film is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
The Malayalam film industry is defying the trend seen in South India, where new movies with A-list stars typically arrive on streaming platforms after about four weeks in theatres. Since the start of 2024, many Malayalam films have opted for longer theatrical runs instead of rushing to streaming.
Streaming platforms have reportedly been selective in investing in Malayalam films, with streamers not offering the same level of investment as they do for Telugu and Tamil movies. To address this imbalance, Malayalam filmmakers have been working to reduce their reliance on streaming platforms to recover production costs. As a result, Malayalam films now take more than 8 to 10 weeks to arrive on streaming platforms.
Level Cross was first released in theatres on July 24. The film came with solid backing: it was presented by hit filmmaker Jeethu Joseph and written and directed by debutant Arfaz Ayub. Dulquer Salmaan's Wayfarer Films distributed it theatrically across Kerala. Despite receiving positive reviews, the film struggled to make a significant impact at the box office.
It remains to be seen whether Level Cross will find a wider audience now that it’s available on streaming.
Based on the trailer, Level Cross is a psychological thriller. The movie revolves around a gatekeeper stationed at a deserted level crossing. Asif Ali's Raghu, who has lost touch with civilization, is overwhelmed by thoughts and emotions when Amala Paul's Chaithali unexpectedly enters his life. The film also stars Sharaf U Dheen in a prominent role.
