Kottukkaali OTT release date: When and where to stream Soori’s award-winning Tamil drama

After a month-long theatrical run, Soori and Anna Ben’s rural drama Kottukkaali is all set to make its digital debut. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker PS Vinothraj, Kottukkaali, starring Soori and Anna Ben, revolves around societal norms imposed on women and the consequences of patriarchy.

It has now been announced that Amazon Prime Video, which purchased the streaming rights to the film, will stream it starting on September 27, 2024. Earlier, the OTT platform Simply South also announced the streaming dates for audiences residing outside India. The movie will be available for streaming from September 27, 2024, on both Amazon Prime Video (for Indian audiences) and Simply South (for audiences outside India).

Written and directed by PS Vinothraj, the Tamil drama starring Soori and Anna Ben follows a family’s efforts to help their daughter, Meena, who is believed to be possessed by a spirit. However, her silence is not due to possession but rather to the patriarchal norms imposed upon her. Soori plays the role of Meena’s groom, Pandi.

Upon its initial theatrical release, the film received high praise from critics but garnered mixed reception from audiences. Many moviegoers were confused by the plot and the open-ended climax. The mixed audience reception contributed to its underwhelming performance at the box office. Additionally, the film clashed with Mari Selvaraj’s Vaazhai, which had an edge over the Soori-starrer. However, most critics lauded Kottukkaali for its emotional depth and thought-provoking plotline, which was further enhanced by its striking visuals.

Despite being an average performer at the box office, the film excelled in the film festival circuit, earning the Special Jury Award at the Transilvania International Film Festival and becoming the first Tamil film to debut at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Kottukkaali was produced under actor Sivakarthikeyan’s production banner, SK Productions, and also marked Malayalam actress Anna Ben’s Tamil debut.
