Kiara Advani on being trolled for signing Kabir Singh: ‘Wouldn't you always want to be versatile?’
Actress Kiara Advani, who played the role of Shahid Kapoor’s on-screen love interest Preeti in Kabir Singh, was criticized for playing the role of a woman who let her toxic boyfriend push her around.
When Sandeep Reddy Vanga ’s film Kabir Singh released, it received mixed reviews from fans as well as critics. While some lauded Shahid Kapoor ’s performance, others accused him as well as the film for glamorizing misogyny and toxic masculinity. His co-star Kiara Advani was also trolled for playing the role of Preeti Sikka, who let her toxic boyfriend walk all over her as if she was a doormat. Many even criticized her for signing the film. Nevertheless, the romantic drama emerged to be a commercial success and Kiara only reached new heights post that.
Well, in a recent interview with Grazia, Kiara opened up about the negative remarks she received. She explained, “As an actor, wouldn't you always want to be versatile? I don't think I can let my judgements come in the way of any character that is grey? If I play a murderer in my next movie, does that make me one? It's hypocritical to praise actors who otherwise play a grey shade and then criticise them when they play a grey shade of a regular character.”
The actress went on to state that the idea of love has always been perfect as well as aspirational for the industry. She shared that when Kabir raised his hand on Preeti she did leave him. Kiara continued to explain, “And if she came back to him in the climax of the film, which was necessary, then that shows that love often supersedes everything else, and all relationships are complicated. The only thing that will lead you to forgiveness is love. So, in a nutshell that's Kabir Singh for those who resonated with the film and me.”
