Following the success of Sundar C’s horror drama Aranmanai 4, there seems to be a new wave of horror-drama films in Kollywood, as Raghava Lawrence is set to continue his hit horror franchise with Kanchana 4. According to the latest updates, the makers are gearing up to begin shooting for the film, and Raghava Lawrence has finished the scripting. Reports suggest that filming is set to start in September 2024, with further details to be announced soon.

    The Kanchana franchise

The Kanchana or Muni franchise is an incredibly successful horror-comedy film series in Tamil cinema, with a massive following in other industries as well. With Kanchana 3 achieving remarkable box office success, grossing over Rs. 100 crores globally, cinephiles are eagerly waiting for the next instalment. Notably, Kanchana 3 clashed with Nani’s Jersey in 2019, which faced tough competition from the Tamil horror comedy, and this highlights the franchise's immense popularity even in Tollywood.

The Kanchana franchise, created and directed by Raghava Lawrence, began with Muni (2007), followed by Muni 2: Kanchana (2011), Muni 3: Kanchana 2: Ganga (2015), and the most recent Muni 4: Kanchana 3 (2019). All films were box office successes, further popularizing the comedy-horror genre in Tamil cinema. The series revolves around a cowardly character who gets possessed by a ghost seeking revenge against those who wronged them. Raghava Lawrence and Kovai Sarala are the only actors to appear in every installment of the series.

    Raghava Lawrence’s other projects

Meanwhile, the Chandramukhi 2 actor will next be seen in director Venkat Mohan's upcoming film Hunter, where he will play an intense character. According to the director, Lawrence will sport two different looks in the film. Apart from Hunter, Raghava Lawrence will appear in Benz, directed by filmmaker Bakkiyaraj Kannan and produced by Lokesh Kanagaraj’s home production company, G Squad. Lawrence is also rumored to be part of Thalaivar 171, the upcoming Rajinikanth-starrer action flick directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. However, an official announcement is awaited.
