Kamal Haasan on Amaran: 'A story long overdue, it transcends language...'

Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan recently shared his pride in producing Amaran, a film that tells the story of late Indian Army Major Mukund Varadarajan. Kamal, calling the film “long overdue,” emphasized the deep cultural and geographical connection he feels with Mukund’s journey. “The director captured Major Mukund’s story beautifully,” Kamal said. “It started in my city, Tambaram, and it ended in the safety of my country —Kashmir to Tambaram is how I see this story.”

Director Rajkumar Periasamy noted that Amaran, starring Sivakarthikeyan in the lead, is a direct reflection of Mukund’s life, with events that hardly needed cinematic exaggeration. He noted that the events in Mukund’s personal and professional life were so larger-than-life that he wasn't required to use his imagination to make it any larger. He called Amaran "just a record of what happened in Mukun'd life."

"Amaran tracendes lanaguge by the virtue of its valor and content. Raaja Kamal Films is proud to have presented a story which is long overdue," added Kamal Haasan. 

Mukund's wife revealed that she felt a serendipity at work when she came to know that Kamal was producing this movie. "Mukund used to quote dialogues from Anbe Sivam when we were dating. And I knew it was working well together and Mukund would be wherever he will be extremely happy to have Kamal Haasan sir produce a movie for him." 

Sivakarthikeyan recalled that the moment he heard the story of Mukund, he was left speechless and experienced a sense of overwhelming that he immediately couldn't say yes to the movie. "But, I took some time to say yes to this movie as I wanted to be mentally prepared first. I was not able to sleep that night. There were many similarities between Major Mukkund and my father. I felt acting in this movie would be a tribute to the real hero and my father."  

Amaran also stars Sai Pallavi as the female lead. And it's due in cinemas on October 31.
