The latest Telugu movie, Kalki 2898 AD , has emerged as the biggest blockbuster of Indian cinema this year. The film marks the beginning of a sprawling cinematic universe, drawing inspiration from the Indian epic, the Mahabharata. It concludes on a massive cliffhanger, setting the stage for an epic clash between Prabhas' Bhairava/Karna and Kamal Haasan's Supreme Yaskin.

However, fans will have to wait longer than anticipated to see how the battle between these two powerful figures in the dystopian setting unfolds. The producers, Vyjayanthi Movies, have announced that production for the sequel, Kalki 2, will commence in January next year, with a planned release in 2028. This timeline surpasses even the long waits for other previously highly anticipated sequels, such as Baahubali 2 and Pushpa 2.

Kalki 2898 AD centres on the second coming of God in a world engulfed by darkness. The insatiable human appetite for power and wealth has drained the universe of its strength, leaving the world's remaining resources consolidated within a flying dome above Kashi City, controlled by Yaskin. Yaskin, who is awaiting a miracle serum to rejuvenate his 200-year-old decaying body, finally acquires a drop of it, regaining enough energy and power to seek more.

Kamal Haasan's character appears for less than 10 minutes in Kalki 2898 AD, but the sequel will focus heavily on his relentless pursuit of power. The movie also stars Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone in key roles.

Since its streaming debut, Kalki 2898 AD has become a top choice for audiences, dominating viewership in recent weeks.

This cinematic universe is an ambitious project of director-writer Nag Ashwin. The first film was mounted at a cost of more than Rs 600 crore, and the film earned over Rs 1000 crore from its worldwide ticket sales, paving the way for the production of the sequel.
