Kaaliyan: Makers of Prithviraj Sukumaran’s long-delayed project unveil special poster on his birthday

Happy Birthday, Prithviraj! On the Malayalam superstar’s 42nd birthday, the makers of his long-delayed Malayalam magnum opus, Kaaliyan released a special birthday poster. For the unversed, Kaaliyan was initially announced in 2017 but never went into production, with the project being shelved for over seven years. Recently, the makers revealed that the film would soon begin rolling once Prithviraj wraps up shooting for his directorial sequel L2: Empuraan.

Taking to social media, the makers shared a thrilling poster from the film, writing, “Team #Kaaliyan wishes a very happy birthday to our hero Prithviraj Sukumaran @PrithviOfficial!” The poster features a backshot of a warrior’s legs, standing on what appears to be a battleground. Directed by S Mahesh, Kaaliyan is set in the 17th century and follows the story of a warrior and confidant of the Venad kingdom’s commander-in-chief, Iravikutti Pillai. Prithviraj plays the titular role in the film. The movie is touted as a big-budget period action thriller about a warrior on a mission that could even cost him his life.

Music composer for Kaaliyan

Earlier, there were several speculations surrounding whether Anirudh Ravichander or KGF-fame composer Ravi Basrur would be onboard to compose the music for Prithviraj’s magnum opus. However, these have remained rumors, and an official announcement is still awaited.

Kaaliyan’s multiple delays

Earlier, scriptwriter BT Anil Kumar revealed that just as the team was ready to begin, the COVID-19 pandemic caused setbacks for the film and its cast. About a year and a half ago, they conducted auditions and discovered new talent in four different categories. However, when they were close to finalizing preparations, Prithviraj met with an accident in September 2023, resulting in a two-month recovery period and further delays. Despite these setbacks, Anil remains hopeful that filming will start soon.

Meanwhile, Prithviraj is currently busy shooting for his upcoming gangster action drama sequel L2: Empuraan, with superstar Mohanlal in the lead.
