Indian 2 trailer: 'It's Chandru, NOT Senapathy!’ Redditors uncover possible twist

Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2 is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated Kollywood films, eagerly awaited by fans for its big-screen experience. The sequel to the 1996 blockbuster film Indian marks the return of India’s veteran army man, Senapathy, who is set to reappear after the nation loses its balance due to rampant corruption. 

Recently, the film's makers released its trailer, which sparked numerous discussions on social media platforms. While the trailer has received both praise and criticism, what intrigued viewers most was a particular scene that has become a topic of intense online debate—Kamal Haasan's character's name.

Decoding hints from Indian 2 trailer

In one fight sequence, eagle-eyed fans noticed stab marks on Kamal Haasan’s character's chest, confirming his name to be Chandru and not Senapathy. 

For those uninitiated, Kamal Haasan played dual roles in Indian—the veteran Senapathy and his son Chandru. In the 1996 film, Chandru secures a job as a brake inspector through bribery and issues a safety certificate to a bus with faulty brakes, which tragically results in the deaths of 40 schoolchildren and the driver.

Chandru attempts to cover up his crime by framing the driver for driving drunk and bribing a police officer and a doctor. However, Senapathy catches him in the act and eventually kills him by stabbing him in the chest.

Reddit breaks down the Indian 2 trailer

Following the trailer’s release, some people have expressed suspicion about a character who would now be over 100 years old performing high-octane stunts.

One Reddit user commented, “In Indian universe, OG thatha is nearly 100 years old. Shankar is not that stupid make a 100 year old do flying stunt sequences and if you have seen all his movies fight sequences always have a specific theme and they blend with character and environment perfectly.”

The comment added. “So this is most likely OG Chandru or some other character cosplaying thatha. That's why the bad and artificial makeup. Also in a trailer shot, Siddharth condemns thatha for not taking arms against corruption. We all know that is not the character of Thatha. He literally sacrificed his daughter just to not pay a small amount of bribe.”

While the filmmakers have yet to disclose whether Chandru is still alive, anticipation is high to uncover the full story when Indian 2 releases in theatres on July 12.
