Gadar 2 Vs OMG 2 Box Office Day 1: Sunny Deol starrer emerges second-highest opener after Pathaan, Akshay's film lags behind

Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel have returned to the big screen after 22 years with a bang. Gadar 2, the sequel to the 2001 film of the same name, has taken the box office by storm. The film has an impressive start with Rs 40 crore per early estimates. On the other hand, OMG 2 starring Akshay Kumar managed to earn Rs 9 crore.

Directed by Anil Sharma, Gadar 2 has become the second-highest opener of 2023 after Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan (Rs 57 crore opening day collection). As per a Bollywood Hungama report, the film could register something around Rs 120 crore on the opening weekend. And further, grow to Rs 175 crore collection over the long weekend with the Independence Day holiday on Tuesday.

Actors Salman Khan and Kangana Ranaut have given a shout-out to Sunny’s film on the opening day. The Tiger actor took to Instagram and wrote, “Dhai kilo ka haath equals chalis cr ki opening (Two and a half kilo hand equals to ₹40 crore opening). Sunny paaji (brother) is killing it. Congrats to the entire team of Gadar 2.” Kangana, on the other hand, re-shared Salman’s post and captioned it with clapping hands emojis, and also added the song Main Nikla Gaddi Leke as the background music.

Akshay’s OMG 2 took a decent start at the box office with an overall 37.53 per cent Hindi occupancy on Friday. The film is a sequel to Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar-starrer OMG: Oh my God. The film managed to surprise trade analysts who predicted its opening collection to be around Rs 85-90 lakh. With so much craze around Gadar 2, the movie’s collection may affect over the opening weekend.

Meanwhile, Gadar 2 focused on Tara Singh and Sakeena's legacy, set amidst the tumultuous Crush India Movement of 1971. OMG 2 gave out an important message on sex education keeping intact the essence of God and devotee relation in the franchise. Both films hit the screen on August 11, 2023.
