Farah Khan reveals why she did not want Katrina Kaif opposite Akshay Kumar in Tees Maar Khan: ‘It was obvious..’
Despite Katrina Kaif and Akshay Kumar’s undeniable on-screen chemistry, Farah Khan was against casting the actress in Tees Maar Khan. Here’s why
There was a time when we were seeing Katrina Kaif and Akshay Kumar together in almost every film they did. From Welcome and Namastey London to Singh is Kinng. Audiences didn’t seem to mind it because the two actors looked wonderful together on-screen and their chemistry was always top notch. Plus, their reunion on the silver screen was a recipe for a superhit, most of the time. Even Tees Maar Khan, which was only a moderate commercial success at the box office, emerged to be iconic only because of Akshay and Kat’s chemistry and the chartbuster hit Sheila Ki Jawani. But did you know director Farah Khan was against casting Katrina opposite Akshay?
In a recent chat with casting director Mukesh Chhabra, for a show on Mashable India, Farah shared that she avoids the obvious choice while casting for a film. She explained, “Main obvious choice se rehti hun thoda door. I think the only time I made an obvious choice was jab maine Tees Maar Khan mein Katrina Kaif ko liya. It was obvious because wo Akshay Kumar ke saath 6-7 movies kar chuki thi and I was very against ki mujhe usko nahi lena hai. But wo ghoom ghaam ke wohi aayi picture mein (I don't make obvious choices. Because Katrina had done 6-7 movies with Akshay, I was absolutely against casting her in my film. But eventually, she only ended up being in the film.)”
Well, we sure are glad that Farah ended up making an exception and went for the obvious choice in this case. Otherwise the world would have missed out on the iconic Sheila Ki Jawani, which was no less than a milestone in Katrina’s acting career. The actress last shared the screen with Bollywood’s Khiladi Akshay in Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi. Interestingly, the film was a reunion for Akshay, Katrina and their Tees Maar Khan director Farah, who was the choreographer of Tip Tip Barsa Paani.
