This year, Shah Rukh Khan made his comeback with bangers like Pathaan and Jawan which took the box office by storm from the very first day. However, the same cannot be predicted for his third film, Dunki that released today. As per early estimates, the film will manage to earn around Rs 30 crore on its opening day.
Trade analyst Sumit Kadel took to Twitter and said that Dunki may touch Rs 38-40 crore on opening day only given positive word-of-mouth. "Tremendous jump in advance booking of Dunki post 5 pm... Peaking at the right time and how. If the film is met with good audience response tomorrow like all Hirani films, then, day 1 would touch Rs 38-40 crore nett. 5 days weekend would easily be Rs 180 crore+ despite clashing with another big film," he tweeted.
So far, Dunki has collected Rs 15.41 crore in the advance booking as per Sacnilk.com. States like Maharashtra and Delhi have highly contributed to advance booking numbers grossing Rs 2.68 crore and Rs 2.3 crore respectively. However, the film stands a lesser chance of breaking the solid record of Jawan and Pathaan on Day 1. For the unversed, Jawan registered a whopping Rs 75 crore, while Pathaan earned Rs 53 crore on its first day of release.
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Dunki is based on the concept of donkey flight, an illegal backdoor entry technique used by immigrants to enter countries such as the UK, the US and Canada. It revolves around the lives of these individuals and their families when they decide to return to their motherland. Besides Shah Rukh Khan, the film also stars Taapsee Pannu, Boman Irani, Vikram Kochhar, Anil Grover and Jyoti Subhash in prominent roles. Vicky Kaushal makes a special appearance in the film. Jointly backed by Red Chillies Entertainment, JIO Studios and Rajkumar Hirani Films, the film was released across 4000 screens in the country and over 13k shows.
