'Don't mess it up': Denzel Washington triumphed in "The tragedy of Macbeth"
Denzel Washington delivered a powerful performance in Joel Coen's cinematic rendition of Shakespeare's timeless classic, "The Tragedy of Macbeth". Together with Frances McDormand, the two Oscar winners form a compelling pair in this highly acclaimed drama.
Denzel Washington, the venerable Oscar-winning actor, brought fresh life to one of William Shakespeare's most iconic characters in Joel Coen's adaptation of "The Tragedy of Macbeth". As reported by Reuters, Washington, who had not seen the 400-year-old play staged before this, relished the opportunity to delve into the material with co-star Frances McDormand and the esteemed director himself.
Denzel Washington on His Take on Macbeth
"It just so happens as fate would have it I've never seen it. I wasn't avoiding it. I just hadn't seen it," confessed Washington, stepping into a role previously portrayed by illustrious names such as Peter O'Toole, Ian McKellen, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender. Despite the formidable legacy, Washington didn't allow himself to be weighed down by expectations.
"That's pressure, huh? Can you imagine that - someone walks up (and says) 'Look, it's been a great play for 400 years. Don't mess it up. Good luck," Washington jokingly recalled. "I didn't feel that pressure. It was going to be a good play, whether I messed it up or not. It'll continue to be and it's open to interpretation."
Macbeth: A Twist to the Timeless Tale
Stepping out from the long shadows of the iconic actors who have brought Macbeth to life, Washington carves out his own rendition, reveling in Coen's unique vision. "That's the great thing about Shakespeare ... it's been done every which way you can. So this was Joel's idea."
Despite the superstition shrouding "The Scottish Play", Washington confessed that he "didn't pay much attention to" it. The actor's laid-back approach and his commitment to the role have certainly paid off, with critics showered rave reviews on "The Tragedy of Macbeth".
The theatrical spectacle, which is bound to reignite a newfound appreciation for Shakespeare, is available for viewing on Apple TV+. As Washington continues to redefine roles and reshape expectations, one thing is certain: the 400-year-old play, in his capable hands, won't be messing up anytime soon.
