Kannada superstar Upendra is all set to make his much-awaited comeback to Tamil cinema after 16 years. The actor will be starring opposite superstar Rajinikanth in the upcoming gangster drama Coolie. Recently, Upendra sat down for an interview with a YouTube channel and revealed how he landed the intriguing role of Kaleesha in the Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial.

Upendra on bagging Rajinikanth's Coolie

The actor said that when director Lokesh visited him, he immediately said yes to the script, expressing that he just wanted to stand beside Rajinikanth and share screen space with him. Upendra told Speed Plus Karnataka, "When Lokesh visited me with a one-liner, I said, ‘I don’t want you to tell me anything. I just want to stand beside Rajinikanth sir. I am a huge fan of his. Who wouldn't wish to act with him? It’s a huge honor for me. There's only one Superstar, and his name is Rajinikanth.' That's it."

Upendra as Kaleesha in Coolie

Earlier, the makers of Rajinikanth’s upcoming gangster action drama unveiled the first look and character poster of Upendra from the film. Introducing him as Kaleesha, the makers revealed a fierce character played by the Kannada star, showcasing his intense avatar, with a hook in his hand and gazing upward with rage. The poster generated a lot of buzz among netizens, who can't wait to witness their favorite actors’ combination scenes on the big screen soon!

The makers of the upcoming action flick had earlier released an exhilarating title teaser featuring superstar Rajinikanth fighting goons in a factory-like setting. The short glimpse was shot in a monochromatic theme, with only the gold color highlighted. The teaser received a massive reception from viewers, who are eagerly waiting for this exciting collaboration.

Helmed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie, starring superstar Rajinikanth in the lead, features several other well-known stars in key roles. So far, Nagarjuna, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, and Soubin Shahir have been confirmed as cast members.
