Chiyaan Vikram is touring across the country to thank audiences for the success of his latest movie, Thangalaan . Adding to the joyous moment is the victory of Ponniyin Selvan 1 at the recently announced 70th National Film Awards.

"Blessed that PS1 is crowned with national recognition, propelled by the love of the audience. Tamil history, literature, culture, and cinema are marching triumphantly together from the past to the present!!" wrote Vikram, reacting to PS1's big haul at the National Awards.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 won the most awards for a film with four significant wins, including Best Tamil Film, Best Sound Design, Best Cinematography, and Best Music (Background Score).

Ponniyin Selvan 1 was director Mani Ratnam's most ambitious project to date. He took more than 30 years to turn the iconic Tamil novel, Ponniyin Selvan, into a big-screen spectacle. Mani Ratnam had been trying to make this film since the 90s. Initially, Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan was set to play the lead role. However, the project didn't materialize due to budget reasons. Kamal moved on, but Mani Ratnam remained committed.

He attempted to start the project a few more times without success. Finally, the project went into production in collaboration with Lyca Productions in 2019. Mani Ratnam shot the film even under the menacing shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic. He completed both parts of the movie in a single stretch and released them back-to-back.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 was a huge commercial success despite garnering mixed reactions. The film is expected to have earned around Rs 500 crore in ticket sales alone. However, Ponniyin Selvan 2 failed to surpass its predecessor, earning just over Rs 300 crore at the box office.

Chiyaan Vikram played one of the leads in the star-studded cast. Vikram's recent performance in Thangalaan, written and directed by Pa Ranjith, is also garnering wide appreciation from audiences and critics. The film has already emerged as the biggest opener in Tamil cinema, earning more than Rs 26 crore globally on its first day.
