After a lukewarm response and average box office performance, Allu Sirish's latest action drama, Buddy, has finally made its OTT debut. The film was initially released in theaters on August 2, 2024. Following less than a month after its theatrical debut, the film has arrived on OTT platforms. Directed by Sam Anton, Buddy stars Allu Sirish and Gayatri Bhardwaj in the lead roles.

    Buddy on Netflix

As announced, Netflix had acquired the OTT rights to the film, which is now available for streaming in multiple languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada. The official social media handle of Netflix shared the new update, and wrote, “Buddy, a teddy bear, and Aditya Ram, the pilot, are up against injustice. Will they help each other and take down the corrupt forces? Watch #Buddy in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada, now on Netflix!”

    Buddy plot and reception

Directed by Sam Anton, Buddy is inspired by actor Arya's 2021 Tamil film Teddy but features a different backdrop and setting. In Buddy, Allu Sirish plays a pilot who is approached by a teddy bear for help on a special mission. Ajmal Ameer plays the main antagonist, while Ali takes on a key role. Gayatri Bhardwaj stars as the female lead. Upon its initial release, the film received mixed to negative reception, with audiences criticizing the filmmakers for delivering an underwhelming screenplay, coupled with terrible performances from the lead.

Although the makers had promised that the film would offer an 'original' story, viewers were not impressed by the storyline, and pointed out that the film was quite similar to Arya's 2021-starrer.

    Allu Sirish on Buddy

During a promotional interview, Allu Sirish revealed that the teddy bear was built from scratch, and the team faced challenges incorporating CGI during post-production.

"A massive teddy bear was created from scratch. The film is about a teddy bear that comes to life and changes the hero's life. Shooting with the teddy bear was challenging because a lot of CG work was added in post-production. The teddy would speak and express emotions, all of which were added later. Imagining the teddy speaking to me and reacting was initially tough," he shared.
