Brendan Fraser had an incredible week at this year's Venice Film Festival where his movie The Whale was universally well received by critics and audiences alike.
The movie received a six-minute long standing ovation and with many saying that the actor's performance in the movie was Oscar-worthy.
Speaking at the press conference at the premier the actor spoke about using prosthetics for his transformation in the movie and the difficulty that came with it.
"I had to learn how to move in a new way," Fraser told journalists at a press conference before the premier.
In The Whale Brendan Fraser plays the role of Charlie, a reclusive who gains over 600 pounds after eating to deal with the loss of a loved one.
When he realizes that he is about to face congestive heart failure, Charlie decides to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter.
"I developed muscles I did not know I had. I even felt a sense of vertigo at the end of the day when all the appliances were removed," Fraser said of the shift in weight. "It was like stepping off the dock onto a boat in Venice. That [sense of] undulating."
The actor also said that the role gave him an appreciation for those who have bodies like Charlie's.
"It gave me appreciation for those whose bodies are similar," he said. "You need to be an incredibly strong person, mentally and physically, to inhabit that physical being."
Fraser went on to say that the role was the most challenging in his career and he thinks of Charlie as a hero.
"By far and away, I think Charlie is the most heroic man I've ever played because his superpower is to see good in others and bring them out in them."
The movie is directed by Darren Aronofsky and is based on the play by Samuel D. Hunter.
The Whale will hit theaters on December 9, 2022.
