Bloody Beggar on OTT: After box office upset, Kavin's black-comedy heading for quick streaming release?

After a modest performance at the Tamil Nadu box office, the streaming release of Bloody Beggar could come sooner than the usual four-week window, following the trend set by recent films with mixed box office responses.

Bloody Beggar was expected to be a major break for up-and-coming actor Kavin. The film was released during the competitive Deepavali festival, alongside several big-ticket movies. However, after an unremarkable performance in theatres, Bloody Beggar is now gearing up for a streaming release.

Amazon Prime Video has acquired the rights to Bloody Beggar. Based on recent trends, the film might arrive on the streaming platform even before completing the standard four-week theatrical window, with an earlier digital premiere likely.

For instance, Nandhan, starring Sasikumar, was available for streaming just 20 days after its theatrical release. The film didn’t perform well at the box office and failed to garner critical acclaim, which might have helped drive ticket sales. With limited financial incentives to keep it in theatres, the producers opted for an early streaming release, though this decision was met with some disappointment by stakeholders.

Bloody Beggar faces similar challenges. The movie was overshadowed by Sivakarthikeyan’s Amaran, a major festival release, which dominated the Tamil Nadu box office. Mixed reviews also hampered Bloody Beggar’s chances. Shortly after, Dulquer Salmaan’s Lucky Bhaskar, originally a Telugu film, further outperformed Bloody Beggar, thanks to strong word of mouth and overwhelmingly positive reviews. In Tamil Nadu, Lucky Bhaskar even outpaced Bloody Beggar and Jayam Ravi’s Brother.

It’s fair to say Bloody Beggar has faded quickly at the box office. With the release of Kanguva, starring Tamil superstar Suriya, Bloody Beggar will likely be pulled from remaining theatres. Expected to open on over 1000 screens in Tamil Nadu alone, Kanguva leaves little room for Bloody Beggar. As a result, it’s unlikely that producer-director Nelson will have reason to delay Bloody Beggar’s streaming debut on Amazon Prime Video.
