Bollywood star Varun Dhawan on Saturday dropped an intense new teaser for his upcoming movie Baby John, offering fans a chilling glimpse of the film’s main antagonist, Babbar Sher, portrayed by veteran actor Jackie Shroff. The teaser has generated excitement, hinting that director Atlee, who is producing the film, has crafted a villain even darker than those in his previous works.

In comparison to Mahendran’s Vanamaamalai in Theri, the film on which Baby John is based, Shroff’s Babbar Sher is portrayed as far more brutal and menacing. The teaser shows Babbar Sher languishing in a high-security prison, relishing violence, and thriving on terrorizing his enemies. His cold, calculated demeanour and taste for savagery suggest a deep-seated grudge.

The teaser has drawn attention to Jackie Shroff’s powerful performance, particularly his portrayal of a character so comfortable with depravity that it is unsettling. Director-writer Kalees seems to have provided Shroff with a dark, layered role that allows him to fully showcase his ability to embody an unrelenting villain. Shroff’s Babbar Sher makes Vanamaamalai look calm and mild in comparison.

Atlee, making his debut as a producer in Bollywood, selected Baby John, a remake of his Tamil hit Theri. However, Kalees has made significant changes to appeal to contemporary audiences, who have become more accustomed to violent, gritty characters in cinema. While the core storyline of Theri remains intact, Baby John seems to promise a darker, more intense cinematic experience.

The film also marks the Bollywood debut of Keerthy Suresh, who is expected to reprise a role similar to Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s from the original. Wamiqa Gabbi joins the cast in a role akin to that played by Amy Jackson in Theri.

Baby John is set to hit theatres on December 25 this year.
