ARM star Tovino Thomas on online reviews: 'No issue unless it's personal'

A section of the Malayalam film industry is raising concerns about the surge of online reviews posted just hours after a movie’s release. However, Malayalam star Tovino Thomas has taken a more balanced stance, stating that he has no issue with critical analysis as long as it refrains from personal attacks on the cast and crew.

Tovino, who is riding high on the success of Ajayante Randam Moshanam (ARM), questioned why some people criticize online reviews when many producers leverage positive reviews for promotional purposes. “We are using snippets from online reviews to promote movies. There is no need to talk against reviews. I only oppose personal attacks, which are unnecessary. You can say whatever you want without making it personal,” Tovino commented.

He also urged reviewers to enhance their understanding of cinema to provide more valuable insights to the audience. “If reviewers can do more research and make their reviews informative, it would benefit both the reviewers and the audience. I am also eager to learn from such critics,” he added.

The Malayalam film industry has coined the term "review bombing," referring to the practice of posting negative reviews immediately after a movie's first screening, potentially discouraging audiences. Film associations in Kerala have even taken the matter to the Kerala High Court, seeking a ban on online reviews. In response, the court ordered authorities to prevent online reviews from social media influencers, YouTubers, and bloggers for seven days following a film's release.

This ruling had sparked mixed reactions across the industry. Several prominent figures, including Mammootty, have voiced their scepticism about the benefits of banning reviews. Recently, producer Abraham Mathew ignited a controversy when he threatened a YouTuber for giving a negative review of his film Bad Boyz.

Tovino's latest movie ARM opened to mostly positive reviews and became a top choice for audiences during the Onam holidays. The film has become one of the biggest hits by earning Rs 100 crore from its worldwide ticket sales.
