The latest Malayalam movie Ajayante Randam Moshanam (ARM) finally made its streaming debut on Friday. After more than eight weeks in theatres, the film has been released on Disney+ Hotstar in multiple languages, alongside its original Malayalam version.
Unlike recent releases from neighbouring states, the latest Malayalam films are showing strong resistance to early OTT releases. Filmmakers increasingly rely on theatrical revenue to recoup their investments rather than depending on streaming revenue to offset potential box office losses. This trend has granted filmmakers greater autonomy over their films' exhibition schedules and has also encouraged them to create films that offer unique theatrical experiences, enhancing their appeal to audiences.
ARM exemplifies this effort to attract audiences to theatres, particularly as home entertainment channels gain momentum nationwide. The film was shot directly with a 3D camera, rather than being converted to 3D in post-production. This approach allowed viewers to experience a richer visual depth, enhancing the movie’s theatrical impact.
ARM is an adventurous period drama centred around the greed and treachery of those vying for control over a magical lamp forged from a fallen star. The film stars Tovino Thomas in three distinct roles, exploring generational struggles and a quest to rise above societal prejudices.
"Jithin Laal’s direction is complemented by the film’s remarkable visual aesthetics. The film’s depiction of feudal Kerala, its grand palaces, dense forests, and intricate cave systems showcases not only the artistry but also the cultural depth of the region. Cinematographer Jomon T. John's breathtaking frames, paired with Dhibu Ninan Thomas' atmospheric score, pull viewers into the heart of the narrative, making the world of ARM feel both immersive and fantastical," reads Desimartini's 3-star review of ARM.
ARM also stars Krithi Shetty, Surabhi Lakshmi, Aishwarya Rajesh, and Basil Joseph.
