Annu Kapoor says Vicky Donor makers only wanted to highlight 'the hero' Ayushmann Khurrana as film clocks 10 yrs
Annu Kapoor gets candid about his only disappointment with his film Vicky Donor.
Ayushmann Khurrana ’s Bollywood debut, Vicky Donor, that shot him to instant fame in the film industry, has completed 10 years since its release. The movie is still as memorable as ever in the minds of the audience as a path breaking piece of cinema talking about a subject like sperm donation.
Actor Annu Kapoor who played the crucial role of Dr. Baldev Chaddha in the Shoojit Sircar directorial calls his character one of the best roles written for him and looks back fondly at the film which broke the taboo around the topic of sex.
The actor, however, also shared what disappointed him about the movie and revealed in an interview with Hindustan Times, how he was simply removed from the spotlight when it came to the promotions and release of the film. Despite having a crucial role that went on to impress the audience, Annu Kapoor feels that the makers only wanted to keep Ayushmann in the limelight.
“During the making, it was quite good and healthy but I certainly felt let down by the producers for not giving me any space or promotion during the release. They just wanted to highlight and promote the hero and certainly not Annu Kapoor and believe me I have always faced this kind of partiality for a long time whether it is a movie or television show or radio show. Perhaps they don’t like ugly faces like Annu Kapoor,” he told the publication.
Annu Kapoor’s character played a fertility specialist in the film who is on the look out for healthy sperm donors. He finds Ayushmann’s character in the film and lures him into donating his sperm often with big incentives.
The actor also spoke about Vicky Donor brining a taboo subject like sex and sperm donation to the big screen and shared that he was never hesitant to be a part of the project. “Although my character was dealing with sex-related activity but our sincerity without being vulgar worked in our favor and the audience accepted the passionate Dr. Chaddha as a professional person genuinely looking for a breakthrough.”
Apart from Annu Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana, Vicky Donor which released in cinemas in 2012, also starred Yami Gautam.
