Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan shared a touching anecdote about his experience working with Superstar Rajinikanth during the filming of the 1991 movie Hum. In a special video message released on Friday, Amitabh spoke fondly of his decades-long friendship with Rajinikanth, which was recently rekindled on-screen in their latest film Vettaiyan after a 30-year gap.
Reflecting on a moment that left a lasting impact on him, Amitabh recalled an incident that occurred during a break on the set of Hum in Mauritius. “It was always a great honour and privilege to be with you. I still remember when we were shooting for Hum and you weren’t required for the shot at that moment. There was a small break, and I happened to go to the area where all the cars were kept. We didn’t have vanity vans in those days,” said Amitabh.
“I went out and sat in my car, and I saw Rajini sir taking some rest. He was lying on the floor, on a piece of plywood, in deep sleep. I could never forget that vision. I felt guilty sitting in the car with the air conditioner on. I remember switching off the AC, stepping out, and sitting in a regular chair outside. I couldn’t bear to be in the car when this great human being was lying on the floor taking a nap,” he added.
Amitabh emphasized how Rajinikanth’s humility made a profound impression on him. “Rajini has always left a mark—not just in the industry but on everyone who has the privilege of coming into contact with him,” he said.
Hum marked the last time the two legends worked together on-screen until their recent collaboration in Vettaiyan. Amitabh plays Justice Dr. Sathyadev, a principled lawyer battling against police encounter killings, while Rajinikanth portrays a top cop celebrated for leading high-profile encounter killings.
Written and directed by TJ Gnanavel, Vettaiyan was released last week to mixed reactions and is currently running in theatres.
