Alia Bhatt's Gangubai Kathiawadi to get a last minute title change based on Supreme Court's suggestion?

Sanjay Leela Bhansali ’s Gangubai Kathiawadi is scheduled to release in cinemas on Friday, However, keeping in mind the many petitions in the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the film’s release, the apex court has suggest filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s production house to consider changing the title of the film.

The suggestion came from a bench including Justices Indira Banerjee and J K Maheswari as they heard Babuji Rawji Shah petition who has filed for stay claiming to be the adoptive son of Gangubai who the film is based on. Shah is not the only member of Gangubai’s family protesting the film’s release. The social worker’s granddaughter has also objected to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s portrayal of her as the madam of Kamathipura.

While Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s lawyer has sought time to confer with the filmmaker on the suggestion, a decision will be made in court on Thursday regarding the stay order based on his response.

Gangubai Kathiawadi has already had its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this month and will release nationwide on 25 February.

If Sanjay Leela Bhansali decides to accept the Supereme Court’s suggestion, the it will be his third will in the decade undergoing title change after a controversy. Prior to Gangubai Kathiawadi, the filmmaker has had to change the title for his films like Padmaavat and Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ramleela ahead of their respective theatrical release.

Babuji Rawji Shah is known to have previously filed for a restraining order against publishers and author Hussain Zaidi on chapter of whose book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ Gangubai Kathiawadi the film is based on. He had sought to restrict them from creating third party rights or writing any other story on his mother’s life.

After being denied by the court, he had approached the Bombay High Court in July last year to seek a stay on Bhansali’s film but on being refused he moved to the apex court for relief.
