Ajith Kumar's Vidaamuyarchi, Kamal Haasan's Thug Life release delayed
With Vidaamuyarchi now a possible contender for the Pongal festival window and Thug Life aiming for a summer release, the Tamil film calendar is set for a significant reshuffle.
Vidaamuyarchi and Thug Life
Fans of Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar may face disappointment as speculations rise that his much-anticipated film Vidaamuyarchi is unlikely to hit theatres this year. According to industry sources, the production of Vidaamuyarchi is taking longer than expected, with filmmakers now eyeing an early 2025 release date.
The reshuffle in release schedules doesn't stop there. Kamal Haasan's upcoming film Thug Life, which was initially expected to be a Pongal release, is also reportedly delayed. The latest buzz suggests Thug Life may now be pushed to summer 2025, potentially paving the way for Vidaamuyarchi to take the Pongal slot.
Earlier, it was speculated that Vidaamuyarchi might be released during the Christmas holidays, with Ajith's other project, Good Ugly Bad, taking the coveted Pongal festival window. However, the Tamil film industry is now bracing for significant changes in its release calendar.
For Ajith’s fans, the wait has been long. His last appearance on screen was in Thunivu, which was released in January 2023. Since then, delays in production have kept audiences eagerly awaiting his next move. Vidaamuyarchi, written by Magizh Thirumeni of Thadam fame, was shot entirely in Azerbaijan and features a star-studded cast, including Trisha, Arjun Sarja, and Regina Cassandra. Production was halted a few months ago due to financial difficulties faced by the production house, Lyca Productions, but the film is now in post-production, with a Pongal 2025 release under consideration.
Meanwhile, Thug Life has also generated significant buzz, marking Kamal Haasan's reunion with filmmaker Mani Ratnam after more than three decades. The film was shot at a rapid pace across Chennai, Delhi, and Jaisalmer, but post-production, including special effects work, may delay its release. Set against a rumoured post-apocalyptic backdrop, Thug Life also stars Simbu.
