Producer KE Gnanavel Raja revealed on Friday that Siva’s next directorial venture will feature Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar. The announcement came during a discussion about the possibility of a sequel to Kanguva, Siva’s latest and most expensive project to date, made on a staggering budget of over Rs 300 crore.
Kanguva, starring Suriya in the lead role, concluded with a setup for a sequel. Gnanavel Raja confirmed that plans for Kanguva 2 are very much in motion. “Siva will first direct Ajith Kumar in his next film. After that, we will start the production of Kanguva 2,” he said. He further revealed that the shooting for Siva and Ajith's film is scheduled to begin in April 2025, with a grand release planned for the Pongal holidays in 2026.
Siva and Ajith have had a successful partnership in the past, delivering hits like Veeram, Vedalam, and Viswasam. However, their spy thriller Vivegam received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office. This led to shelving a proposed futuristic drama due to its high budget and timing concerns. Cinematographer Vetri Palanisamy, who worked on Kanguva, previously disclosed that Siva had envisioned the project as a groundbreaking sci-fi drama with Ajith in the lead, but it was put on hold.
While Siva excels in crafting high-octane, family-centric action dramas, his ventures outside this comfort zone, such as Vivegam and Kanguva, have elicited polarizing reactions. Kanguva opened to massive expectations but has received mixed reviews, leading to concerns about its box office performance. Despite this, Gnanavel Raja remains confident that the film will emerge as a success by the end of its opening weekend.
Set 700 years in the past, Kanguva blends history and fantasy, delivering a series of high-voltage action sequences. The story unfolds amidst warring tribes inhabiting unique islands surrounded by the sea. The movie also features Bobby Deol and Disha Patani, among others.
