96 Part 2 on the cards! Director C Prem Kumar drops major updates on the sequel

The Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha-starrer romantic drama 96 won millions of hearts when it made its theatrical debut in 2018. The Tamil film garnered massive acclaim from critics and audiences, eventually attaining cult classic status among moviegoers. Although audiences have always yearned for a sequel, the film's ending, with Jaanu leaving and Ram reminiscing about her, left viewers believing the makers did not intend to continue their story. However, director C Prem Kumar has now revealed significant details about working on a sequel.

Prem Kumar on 96 sequel

In a recent interview, the 96 director shared that he has already completed the script and has narrated the story to Vijay Sethupathi’s wife. "I wish to do the sequel to 96, as I have finished writing the story. Initially, I didn’t want to write it, but I ended up really liking how it turned out, and I am eager to make it soon," he said. 

He added, "I narrated it to Vijay Sethupathi sir’s wife, and she really liked it. I think even I am too excited to make this film, as I am eagerly awaiting the performances in this sequel. But in the end, it’s not entirely in my hands. Vijay sir and Trisha ma’am’s dates must also be available. So, I’m hoping to begin soon!" 

The now-viral clip of the director’s sequel plans for 96 has excited fans, who are eagerly awaiting to see what lies ahead for Ram and Jaanu’s incomplete love story.

For the unversed, 96 revolves around classmates Ram and Jaanu, who are separated during their school years but meet again when their batchmates organize a high school reunion 22 years later. The story follows the stars as they reminisce about their bittersweet past. 

Prem Kumar's upcoming film Meiyazhagan

Meanwhile, the director’s upcoming film Meiyazhagan, starring Karthi and Arvind Swamy, is slated for release on September 27, 2024. The movie follows two cousins of opposite nature who become arch-enemies. Actress Sri Divya reportedly plays Karthi’s sister in the movie and is the female lead in the film.
