Bollywood often serves lifestyle inspirations and viral trends but did you know that these movies served as inspiration for serious real-life criminal offences?
There is not dearth of inspiring stories in Bollywood. However, in rare occasions Bollywood’s elaborately mounted fictional tales turned real life horror stories as some miscreants tried to re-create the plots of films to commit crimes in real life.
From the John Abraham and troop’s Dhoom robbery to Dishyam’s murder mystery, check out the Bollywood films whose stories becoming horrifyingly real.
Darr - In 2016, a Snapdeal employee was abducted by her stalker in Ghaziabad who wanted to try and convince her of his love after kidnapping her. The man named Devendra had help from several accomplices who helped him in the abduction of the woman named Dipti and after taking her to stranded location he tried to convince her that he was trying to save her.
Upon arrest the man admitted that he was inspired by Shah Rukh Khan ’s character in Darr where the actor is seen in love with Juhi Chawla ’s character and stalks her endlessly.
Drishyam – The 2015 edge of the seat thriller became an inspiration for a real life murder in Bhopal. A man called Indrapal Singh after being inspired by from Ajay Devgn ’s character in the film committed a murder and threw the victim’s body in the Hathikeda Dam in December 2015.
The case came to light after the victim’s wife lodged a missing person’s complaint.
Khosla Ka Ghosla – Some employees of the Delhi Development Authority inspired by Boman Irani ’s fraudulent property dealer in the film re-sold already sold out properties to make extra money and caused major clashes. The police revealed that the case from 2013 was inspired from the film’s plot.
Dhoom – John Abraham and his gang of biker thieves in 2004’s Dhoom became an inspiration for quite a few crimes and robberies in the country. A notable case was the Chelembra Bank Robbery in Kerala in 2007.
Taking inspiration from the film’s final heist where John and his gang conduct a high profile robbery during an ongoing New year party, the real life thugs dug a tunnel to the vault of the bank and stole money and gold worth Rs. 8 crores all while there was New Year bash going on.
Special 26 – The movie starring Akshay Kumar which was inspired by a real life robbery, led to another high profile case where a group of eight men posing as Income Tax officers tried looting a garmet dealer’s home in Mumbai. They stole Rs. 1.5 crores in a fake raid and admitted to be inspired by the film.
Bunty Aur Babli – Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherji made quite the pair as cons in this 2005 comedy which later became a source of inspiration for a man and a woman in Delhi to conduct crimes together in 2013. In over a year, the duo where booked for over two dozen cases of snatching, assault, attempt to murder, and attack on policemen. The duo where nabbed by the police but later released on bail.
The continued to add cases to their criminal records post bail but the police only managed to arrest the man in the second time while the woman remained missing.
Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye! –Abhay Deol’s film inspired a man named Israar and his group to steal over 180 cars in a year using the best available technology to lift these vehicles. In 2018 another case involving two men came to light in Mumbai where the accused were involved in 11 house break-ins and admitted they had learnt their tactics from the film.
Munna Bhai M.B.B.S – This out and out entertainer gave way to examination rackets across the country. In Gurgaon two men were arrested trying two appear on behalf of the actual aspirants for a primary school teachers’ examination in 2017.
Earlier, in Delhi, a group of cheats started SMSed answers to 10+2 students during the exam and charged them in lakhs with a Delhi sub-inspector also involved in the racket.
Bombay To Goa – Three men from an MNC were set were caught in the act of trying to loot the safe in a warehouse after being inspired by the robbery scene in the film.
