American actress and talk show host Jada Pinkett Smith made a startling revelation when she spoke about being separated from her husband Will Smith. The now estranged couple had been living separate lives since 2016, the 52-year-old actress told Today in an interview, which is scheduled to air on Friday on NBC at 8 pm ET.
A promotional clip from the said interview has Jada talking about her separation from Will. The host mentioned that it wasn’t “a divorce on paper, but it was a divorce” and Jada can be seen agreeing to the same. When probed about why the news about their split was kept a secret for so long, Jada mentioned that it’s because they weren’t “ready yet” and were “trying to figure out between the two of us, how to be in partnership.” The actress also added that they hadn’t quite figured out how to present (the news) to the people.
One would wonder why the couple didn’t get a divorce when they’ve been separated for seven years. Addressing the same, Jada reportedly shared that she did consider to get a legal divorce but couldn’t go ahead with the same as she had made a promise that there won’t be any reason for them to get a divorce and that they’d work through whatever comes their way. “And I just haven’t been able to break that promise,” said the actress.
When asked about the reason why their relationship went kaput, Jada further revealed in the interview that both were “too exhausted” of trying (to make it work) by the time it was 2016. She added, “We were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.”
Jada was speaking ahead of the release of her memoir titled Worthy. She and Will have a 25-year-old son Jadon, and 22-year-old daughter Willow together.
