    Malayalam actress Kani Kusruti has become a global sensation ever since her film All We Imagine As Light won the Grand Prix award at the 2024 Canes Film Festival. Speaking about featuring in films that align with her politics, Kani revealed in a recent interview that she rejected the audition call from Sudipto Sen, who had directed the 2023 film The Kerala Story.

    During a conversation with Manorama Online, Kani said that she could only do films that come to her, and if she did not get employment, she would have to do films that do not align with her politics. The actress added that she tries to avoid doing films that do not align with her politics and revealed that she rejected an audition call by The Kerala Story director Sudipto Sen.

    The actress showcased that she does not shy away from taking a political stance as she flaunted a watermelon bag on the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival, in solidarity with the Palestine issue.

    Talking about starring in Sajin Baabu’s Biriyaani, which portrayed the Muslim community in a stereotypical manner, Kani revealed that she told the director that neither her politics nor the aesthetics align with the script. “Sajin comes from a backward Muslim community and speaks his politics, which is correct in its own right. But that is not my politics,” she explained.

    Speaking about her acting journey, the actress stated that even after winning the Kerala State Award for her performance in Sajin Baabu's 2019 film Biriyaani, she did not receive many film offers.

    Kani rose to international fame after starring alongside Divya Prabha and Chhaya Kadam in Payal Kapadia’s Hindi-Malayalam film All We Imagine As Light. The film became the first Indian film to enter the main competition of the Canes Film Festival after thirty years and the first to be directed by an Indian woman. All We Imagine As Light also became the only Indian film to have won the Grand Prix Award at Cannes.
