When did Sidharth Malhotra's filmography go downhill? Decoding a string of box office duds

Sidharth Malhotra enjoys a vast female fan following owing to those drool-worthy good looks and a boy-next-door charm. However, when it comes to delivering a prominent list of commercial hits or exploring versatile characters, the actor has yet to knock it out of the park like his contemporaries. Apart from this, Malhotra remains a poster child for Dharma Productions and while he has worked in banners outside the production house, those films have not been able to make a solid impact.

Talking about the same, Sidharth’s movies with Dharma Productions range from Student Of The Year, Hasee Toh Phasee, Brothers, Kapoor And Sons, Shershaah, and the upcoming action flick Yodha. Out of these films, Shershah, Student Of The Year, Hasee Toh Phasee, and Kapoor And Sons managed to get critical acclaim and commercial success. However, Malhotra went through a rocky and meandering phase when it came to exploring films outside of Dharma. A Gentleman, Ittefaq, Baar Baar Dekho, Aiyaary, Jabariya Jodi, Marjaavaan, Thank God and Mission Majnu emerged as a string of flops for the actor. Not only this but some audiences also found his performance and character range to be one-note in these films. The good-looking and rogue guy who fights the baddies and occasionally romances the heroine.

On the other hand, if you compare the filmographies of Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, Sidharth’s ‘co-students’ who also made their Bollywood debut with him in the year 2012, one will find comparatively more versatility and also more commercially successful films. It can be safely said that the stand-out film in Malhotra’s career was none other than the 2021 film Shershaah. While it seemed that the biographical drama would mark a U-turn for his career, he again delivered some underwhelming projects post that.

His latest OTT outing Indian Police Force also failed to impress the masses. We wonder if the action hero or army/policeman formula not working for the actor anymore. Here is hoping that the ambitious actioner Yodha can do some wonders for Malhotra this time.
