Kareena Kapoor’s much-awaited digital debut film Jaane Jaan has finally been released on Netflix. Sujoy Ghosh’s thriller sees her in the role of a mysterious single mother, who is caught in a crime investigation. The show also stars Jaideep Ahalawat as her neighbour, who is a gifted math teacher, while Vijay Varma plays a relentless cop who digs into the case. The 139-minute-long film is based on the third novel of Keigo Higashino's Detective Galileo series, The Devotion of Suspect X. However, social media users found its storyline to be a mix of Drishyam and Kahaani. The film opened to mixed reviews with some disappointed viewers saying that it is a tale of intrigue which doesn’t grip.
“What a waste of a great cast & premise. dreadful cinematography. awful pacing. every opportunity to create some form of suspense is squandered. Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vijay Varma & Jaideep Ahlawat barely keep things interesting. an absolute nothing-burger film,” wrote an X user. “Despite a talented cast, #JaaneJaan disappoints. #KareenaKapoor, #JaideepAhlawat, and #VijayVarma shine, but a disjointed plot leaves us wanting more. It's a missed opportunity for a compelling narrative,” added another user. “#JaaneJaan could have been better. The expectations were too high for Sujoy Ghosh's film, couldn't live up.” read a comment. Check out X reactions here:
Nevertheless, the performances in Jaane Jaan have been lauded, especially of Jaideep Ahlawat. “Dear @JaideepAhlawat, just watched #JaaneJaan, your skills are top notch, the movie was thrillingly entertaining and each moment you were on screen it was a real treat .. such a wonderful experience..,“ said a netizen. Another commented, “ What a performance by #JaideepAhlawat in #JaaneJaan. It was his movie hands down.”
Jaane Jaan’s release date coincided with Kareena’s 43rd birthday. Some of the users also showered appreciation for her Maya character. “30 mins into #JaaneJaan #KareenaKapoorKhan WHAT A BLOODY PERFORMER!!!” wrote a user. “Kareena Kapoor as Maya D’Souza is impossible to take your eyes off of. For a thriller, hers is a performance that fits the genre perfectly. To be able to make the audience wonder if there’s more under the surface even when actions are predictable,” read a comment.
