Actor Vijay Sethupathi unveiled the first look of his upcoming movie, Viduthalai Part 2, on Wednesday. The poster showcases two contrasting moods of his character, Perumal "Vaathiyaar." In one image, Sethupathi appears as a happily married man with his wife, played by Manju Warrier. In another, he is depicted in a rage, wielding a long sickle with his shirt stained in blood. The first look hints at the intense and multifaceted narrative expected in the sequel.

It's clear that the origin story of Perumal "Vaathiyaar" is about a rebel leading an armed rebellion against the system. In Viduthalai Part 1, Sethupathi had limited screen time as director Vetrimaaran used the majority of the runtime to establish the inhumane system in effect in interior parts of the country that don't get much attention from the mainstream media.

Viduthalai Part 1 acquainted audiences with the cruel process that stripped the tribal people of dignity and subjected them to unspeakable horrors by the cops running a special task force to nab "Vaathiyaar."

"Vaathiyaar" is perceived as an enemy of the state as he prevents corporations from setting up businesses in the area. While the government claims that this project will generate job opportunities for locals, the rebels believe it will deprive people of their rights.

Viduthalai Part 1 marked comedian Soori's transition to playing lead roles. Soori's Constable Kumaresan guides the audience through the day-to-day challenges of tribal people living under the constant threat of police highhandedness. The film ends with Kumaresan helping the task force arrest Vaathiyaar.

Viduthalai Part 2 is expected to be high on philosophy, and politics, and laced with Vetrimaaran's trademark gritty storytelling.

Viduthalai Part 2 has been in the making for some time now. The filmmakers have not announced the release date yet.
